Details

Details

Due to the high temperatures and smaller volumes of water, hot tubs and spas are extremely vulnerable to illness-causing bacteria, fungus, mold, and other harmful contaminants. Most of these contaminants are transferred into the water from the skin or bathing suites of bathers. The catalysts are substances such as soaps, lotions, hair products, or other greasy substances. They will settle in the filters, jets, or plumbing and begin to spread from there.

In order to keep your water clear and your bathers safe, it is important to use a sanitizing agent such as chlorine granules regularly. It is a critical part of any spa care program. SunGuard Spa Chlorinating Granules react with water to release hypochlorous acid, the active killing form of chlorine that does the actual sanitizing work. By leaving a stabilized chlorine residual in your spa, you can rest assured that your bathers will never come home with a serious illness or fungus transferring to their bodies.

How to use

How to use

When applying the Sunguard Spa Granular Chlorine, ensure all spa equipment is working properly first. If necessary, backwash and/or clean the filter system following the manufacturer’s directions on the back of the label.

Also adjust the pH to 7.2 to 7.6. If the pH reading is below 7.2, the water is considered “acidic.” The sanitizer will be much less effective, and you will end up using more chlorine with less efficiency. When using other products as outlined in the directions in combination with this product, always follow directions on those products.

How to shock a hot tub with chlorine granules?

With pump on, add 1/2 teaspoon of this product per 100 gallons of water (or 5 teaspoons per 1,000 gallons) as an initial treatment. Repeat at 15 to 20 minute intervals until a residual of 3 to 5 ppm of available chlorine is established as determined by a test kit. A test kit or test strips must be used regularly to determine the frequency of additional doses of this product needed to maintain the chlorine residual of 3 to 5 ppm.

How to Superchlorinate a hot tub with chlorine granules?

Use one teaspoon of this product per 100 gallons of water (or 1/4 cup per 1,000 gallons). Superchlorination may be needed on a nightly basis in a heavily used spa or as infrequently as once a week in a moderately used spa. Frequency of treatment is dependent on ambient temperatures, light intensity, water replacement and bather load.

FAQ

FAQ

How to lower chlorine in hot tub?

  • Once the chlorine levels in your hot tub or spa have surpassed the desired level, it is recommended to simply wait and let it break down naturally. If you just can’t wait to get in, try using a chlorine neutralizer such as granular sodium thiosulfate. This will “dechlorinate” your hot tub water and allow you to soak sooner.

How to raise free chlorine in hot tub?

  • Free Chlorine can be raised by applying spa shock, or any similar oxidizing agent.

How much chlorine to add to hot tub?

  • For a regular hot tub treatment, add ½ a teaspoon of chlorine granules per 100 gallons (5 teaspoons per 1,000 gallons). It is recommended to test your water with a test kit, making sure you have a residual of 3 to 5 ppm of available chlorine in your hot tub water. When Super shocking, use double the dosage (1 teaspoon per 100 gallons).

How often to add chlorine to hot tub?

  • The hot tub sanitizing process varies greatly on how often the tub is used, where the hot tub is located, and weather. We recommend to frequently test the hot tub water and make sure the available chlorine is between 3-5 ppm. If you regularly use your spa and have a routine treatment program in place, you will generally add chlorine to your hot tub about twice a week.

Can I use chlorine shock in a bromine hot tub?

  • Under any circumstance, DO NOT mix the two sanitizers together in a body of water. It will cause a dangerous chemical reaction that can cause harm to the skin, eyes, and hair.
